Principle of VPSA Oxygen Generator

The main components in the air are nitrogen and oxygen. Using the different adsorption properties of nitrogen and oxygen in the air on zeolite molecular sieves (ZMS) at ambient temperature (oxygen can pass through while nitrogen is adsorbed), an appropriate process is designed to make nitrogen Separated from oxygen to produce oxygen.
The adsorption capacity of nitrogen on the zeolite sieve is stronger than that of oxygen (the interaction between nitrogen and molecular sieve surface ions is stronger), when the air passes through the adsorption bed equipped with zeolite molecular sieve adsorbent under pressure, nitrogen is adsorbed by the molecular sieve, and oxygen is absorbed by the molecular sieve. The adsorption is less, and it is enriched in the gas phase and flows out of the adsorption bed, so that oxygen and nitrogen are separated to obtain oxygen.
When the molecular sieve absorbs nitrogen to be close to saturation, stop the air flow and reduce the pressure of the adsorption bed, the nitrogen adsorbed by the molecular sieve can be desorbed, and the molecular sieve can be regenerated and reused. More than two adsorption beds work alternately to produce oxygen continuously.

Device process of VPSA Oxygen Generator

The oxygen production process of the pressure swing adsorption air separation oxygen production plant must contain two operating steps; adsorption and desorption. In order to obtain product gas continuously, more than two adsorption towers are usually installed in the oxygen plant, and from the perspective of energy consumption and stability, some necessary auxiliary steps are additionally set.
Each adsorption bed generally undergoes the steps of adsorption, depressurization, evacuation or decompression regeneration, flushing and replacement, and pressure equalization and boosting steps, and the operation is repeated periodically.

At the same time, each adsorption tower is in different operation steps, and it is switched regularly under the control of PLC, so that several adsorption towers operate in harmony, and the time steps are staggered from each other, so that the pressure swing adsorption device can run smoothly and continuously obtain Product gas.
The number of adsorption towers required for an oxygen plant depends on the scale of oxygen production, the performance of the adsorbent and the design of the process. The operation stability of multi-tower operation is relatively better, but the investment in equipment is relatively high.
The current trend is: use high-efficiency oxygen-generating adsorbents to minimize the number of adsorption towers and adopt short operating cycles to improve device efficiency and save investment as much as possible.

What is the service life of the molecular sieve?
The service life of the molecular sieve depends on the quality of the intake compressed air. In case the recommended standards are kept, the sieve can be operated for up to 8 years and even considerably longer.
What are the maintenance expenses for the PSA N2/O2 generators ?
In case of a use of 24 hours daily, the elements of the internal filter must be exchanged, in rotation, every six months. The valves must be exchanged every five years. The maintenance of air compressor are according to the recommendations of the air compressor manufacturer.
What are the key benefits of on-site N2/O2 generators compared to delivered gas?
  • You save up to 80% on the cost of the nitrogen or oxygen compared to buying  in bulk.
  • Payback is usually under 12 months, and the product has a typical lifetime over 10 years.
  • A constant supply is ensured: you never have to worry about a delivery not getting to you in time again.
  • Save space & minimize risk and handling errors: no need for gas bottles/liquid nitrogen tank in the yard.
  • Simplify administration to save time & money with no weekly deliveries to manage.
  • Very low running costs: uses your compressed air supply.
Are PSA N2/O2 generators safe?
Yes. As the generator does not add or take anything away from the atmospheric air, you could have one running in a closed room with no change to the overall content of the atmosphere. They also negate the need to store and move potentially dangerous high pressure cylinders on site.
